How the Calculator Works

The ASCVD Risk Calculator is based on the 2013 ACC/AHA Pooled Cohort Equations, the standard clinical tool used by cardiologists and primary care physicians to guide statin therapy decisions.

It estimates the probability of a first major atherosclerotic cardiovascular event — defined as a non-fatal myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease death, or fatal/non-fatal stroke — over 10 years.

Risk Categories

  • Low: <5% — Lifestyle modification focus
  • Borderline: 5%–7.4% — Risk-benefit discussion
  • Intermediate: 7.5%–19.9% — Moderate-intensity statin therapy
  • High: ≥20% — High-intensity statin therapy

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should use this calculator?

The Pooled Cohort Equations are validated for adults aged 40–79 without pre-existing cardiovascular disease. If you're outside this age range, the results may not apply. Always discuss results with your physician.

What does the 10-year risk percentage mean?

It represents the estimated probability that you will experience a major cardiovascular event — heart attack or stroke — in the next 10 years, based on your current risk factors.

Is my data stored or shared?

No. All calculations are performed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No data is transmitted to, stored on, or processed by any server.

How accurate is this calculator?

The Pooled Cohort Equations were derived from multiple large cohort studies. However, risk calculators estimate population-level probabilities and may over- or under-estimate risk for specific individuals. It is a decision-support tool, not a diagnostic instrument.

Can I lower my ASCVD risk?

Yes. Stopping smoking, controlling blood pressure, lowering LDL cholesterol, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing diabetes are all evidence-based strategies to reduce your score. Read our guide for detailed strategies.
